What to see and do in El Rosario

El Rosario
Village
A municipality established in 1813, with its administrative capital at La Esperanza, at 900 metres above sea level, despite taking its name from the Virgen del Rosario, patron saint of the coastal settlement. The territory had been inhabited since Guanche times, when it formed part of the menceyato (kingdom) of Güímar. A hermitage dedicated to the Virgen de la Esperanza had already existed at La Esperanza since the 16th century.
Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza
Monument
The church of La Esperanza, administrative capital of El Rosario, heir to a 16th-century hermitage dedicated to the same devotion that gives the settlement its name. It is the religious and urban centre of the municipality, situated at 900 metres above sea level in the midlands of Anaga.
El Encuentro de Las Raíces (1936)
Historical milestone
At the site of Las Raíces, in a forest of Canary pines and eucalyptus in the Monte de la Esperanza, a semi-secret meeting was held on 16 or 17 June 1936 between Tenerife's principal military commanders and General Franco, then commander general of the Canary Islands, at which the final plans were laid for the coup that a month later triggered the Civil War. A commemorative monument was erected there in 1956; it was demolished in 2015 by the Tenerife Cabildo under the Historical Memory Law, and replaced by a park with no glorification of either side.
Bosque de La Esperanza
Nature
A forested area in the midlands of El Rosario, within the Paisaje Protegido de Las Lagunetas, combining reforested Canary pine and eucalyptus with pockets of original laurisilva, such as the one known as the Bosque del Adelantado. It contains the recreational site of Las Raíces.
