What to see and do in Tegueste

Tegueste
Village
Its name comes from an old Guanche menceyato (kingdom), which some researchers translate as "damp" and link to the North African Tagaste of Saint Augustine. A first hermitage of San Marcos was built in 1530, raised to parish status in 1606; the municipality became independent in 1813 and received the title of Villa in 1996.
Iglesia de San Marcos Evangelista
Monument
An 18th-century church, successor to the founding hermitage of 1530, standing on the square that together with it forms part of the historic centre of Tegueste, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1986.
Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Socorro
Monument
A 16th-century hermitage, one of several scattered across the municipality of Tegueste alongside those of San Gonzalo, San Luis, Santo Domingo and San Pedro de Alcántara.
Drago del Prebendado Pacheco
Nature
A monumental Canary dragon tree at the Pedro Álvarez site, in the Tegueste sector of the Parque Rural de Anaga, alongside another notable tree, the wild olive of La Fuga; both grow amid patches of laurisilva and fayal-brezal scrub.
Vinos de la Denominación de Origen Tacoronte-Acentejo en Tegueste
Food and drink
The vineyards of Tegueste, part of the long-standing farming tradition alongside the fruit orchards of its valleys, fall under the Denominación de Origen Tacoronte-Acentejo, the first wine designation of origin recognised in the Canary Islands.
La Librea de Tegueste
Activity
A theatrical and military performance of Baroque origin (17th century) that re-enacts a symbolic clash in procession, held every three years as part of the festival of the Virgen de los Remedios, on 8 September.
