What to see and do in El Sauzal

El Sauzal
Village
Settled around 1500, with a hermitage of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles founded by Alonso Bello in 1505. It became an independent municipality in 1812 and received the title of Villa on 31 May 1985. It is one of the smallest municipalities on Tenerife by area and forms part of the Tacoronte-Acentejo wine district.
Iglesia de San Pedro Apóstol
Monument
A 16th-century parish church, a heritage asset of El Sauzal, located in the municipality's historic centre.
Casa del Vino La Baranda
Monument
A museum housed in the 17th-century manor of the Hacienda de San Simón, founded by the Sevillian Simón de Herrera Leyva, administrator of the tobacco revenue office in Tenerife. The City Council acquired the estate in 1989 and handed it over to the Cabildo in 1992 to create the Casa de la Vid y el Vino, opened on 15 April 1995; it preserves the cobbled courtyard, the wine press, the chapel and the original wooden ceilings, and also houses the Museo de la Miel de Tenerife (Tenerife Honey Museum).
Mirador de La Garañona
Nature
A coastal viewpoint in El Sauzal, one of the most notable overlooking the north coast of Tenerife, alongside those of Las Breñas and El Casco, on a stretch of cliffs where the endemic Lotus maculatus grows.
Sor María de Jesús de León y Delgado, "la Siervita"
Historical milestone
A Dominican nun born in El Sauzal on 23 March 1643 and died on 15 February 1731, popularly known as "la Siervita". Her beatification process, opened in the 19th century and reopened in 1992, is still today at the Roman stage. Her incorrupt body is kept in the convent of Santa Catalina in La Laguna and is the object of widespread devotion in Tenerife.
