What to see and do in Arico

Arico
Village
A municipality in southeastern Tenerife belonging in Guanche times to the menceyato of Abona. It is documented as a settlement from 1590 and was designated a 'lugar real' (royal domain) in 1635; it became a municipality in 1812 and King Alfonso XIII granted it the title of villa in 1916. It is spread across nine population centres between the coast and the highlands.
Iglesia de San Juan Bautista (Arico)
Monument
The main parish church of the Villa de Arico, built next to an earlier 1603 hermitage. In Arico el Nuevo stands the church of Nuestra Señora de la Luz, which houses a 16th-century Gothic carving of the Virgin, and in El Río the hermitage of San Bartolomé preserves 17th-century religious imagery.
Faro de Punta de Abona
Monument
A lighthouse on the coast of Arico, at Punta de Abona, between the lighthouses of Punta de Rasca and Anaga. It was first lit in 1902 with a range of 16 nautical miles, and in 1978 the original tower was replaced by the current one, which reaches 28.5 miles. Beside it stands the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes, rebuilt in the early 20th century on the site of an original 1514 building.
Denominación de Origen Abona
Food and drink
A wine Denominación de Origen on the southern side of Tenerife, whose regulating council was created in 1995 and officially recognised in 1996, although the bottling and marketing of wine from the district — also called Chasna — dates back to the 1950s, when the Fasnia cooperative opened the first winery. It covers seven municipalities: Fasnia, Arico, Granadilla de Abona, San Miguel de Abona, Vilaflor, Arona and Adeje, with vineyards ranging from sea level up to the highest midlands in Spain, at Vilaflor.
Parque Nacional del Teide en Arico
Nature
The municipal territory of Arico extends through its highlands, around the Topo de Veno (2,572 m), up to the Parque Nacional del Teide, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2007.
Fiesta de la Virgen de Abona
Curiosity
The festival of Arico's patroness, whose image is only carried in procession every five years; the municipality's patron saint, San Juan Bautista, is celebrated on 24 June.
