What to see and do in San Miguel de Abona

San Miguel de Abona
Village
A municipality in the south of Tenerife whose town centre occupies one of the main settlement sites of the old menceyato of Abona. After the 1496 conquest it was settled by colonists, conquerors and Guanches; its hermitage, dedicated to San Miguel Arcángel, was built around 1665 and raised to parish status in 1796. It broke away from Vilaflor on 13 March 1798, forming its own first town council, and was established as a constitutional municipality in 1812-1813.
Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel y Conjunto Histórico
Monument
A parish church declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 2013, at the heart of the historic ensemble of San Miguel de Abona's town centre, which preserves architecture from the 18th to the 20th century, including the building known as El Calvario and the Casa del Capitán.
Monumento Natural del Roque de Jama
Nature
A volcanic rock formation around 11 million years old, one of the few surviving remnants of the old Macizo de Adeje, one of the three original massifs that formed Tenerife alongside the Teno and Anaga massifs. It stretches between the municipalities of San Miguel de Abona and Arona, reaches 775 metres in height, and, together with the site of La Centinela, brings together close to fifty Guanche archaeological sites.
