What to see and do in Fasnia

Fasnia
Village
A municipality on the southeastern side of Tenerife, belonging in Guanche times to the menceyato of Abona. From the 16th century it shared a royal mayor with Güímar, Arafo and Candelaria, until in 1795 it split off from that district and was reduced to its present boundaries. Its flag, approved on 17 June 1998, recalls with a red stripe the eruptions of 5 January 1705 and with a sky-blue stripe the waters of its hills.
Iglesia de San Joaquín (Fasnia)
Monument
The main parish church of the town centre of Fasnia, which grew out of a hermitage raised to parish status in 1796. Alongside it stand the ruined 17th-century Iglesia Vieja de Fasnia and the also 17th-century church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen in the hamlet of La Zarza.
Barranco de Herques
Historical milestone
A ravine of great archaeological interest whose caves have yielded Guanche mummies and objects such as the well-known Guatimac idol, evidence of the occupation of this territory by the old menceyato of Abona.
Parque Nacional del Teide en Fasnia
Nature
The municipality of Fasnia reaches, in its highlands around Montaña Abreu (2,402 m), the Parque Nacional del Teide, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on 28 June 2007 and shared with twelve other Tenerife municipalities.
Fiestas de San Joaquín
Curiosity
The patronal festival of Fasnia in honour of San Joaquín, held in the third week of August; the municipality also celebrates its patroness, the Virgen del Rosario, in October.
