What to see and do in Lituénigo

Lituénigo
Village
Lituénigo is a municipality in the province of Zaragoza, in the comarca of Tarazona y el Moncayo, set on the slopes of the Moncayo at 756 m above sea level, 14 km from Tarazona and 87 km from Zaragoza. It has 123 inhabitants. Part of its territory, some 18 ha, forms part of the Dehesa del Moncayo natural park, with holm oak woods up to 900 m and oak and pine woods above that height. It is watered by the Pedrogal river and the Pradillo ravine, which meet at the site of La Zarzosa; near the village stands the dam of a former reservoir of Arab-era origin called El Soto. Lituénigo holds two festivities declared of tourist interest in Aragon: la Pesada, the traditional weighing of children, and the fair of lost trades.
Church of Lituénigo
Monument
Parish church of Lituénigo (Zaragoza, Tarazona y el Moncayo), famous for the traditional Pesada. Dedicated to the Purification of the Virgin, the current building dates from the 17th century and was built over an earlier 13th-century structure, remains of which are still preserved at the base of the tower. On the Sunday of the patronal festivities, the last weekend of September, the Weighing of the Children is held, declared a Fiesta de Interés Turístico (official Spanish designation for festivals of tourist interest) and documented since 1295: it includes the collection of wheat (la Llega), the weighing of children born that year, and the auction of the wheat collected.
La Pesada de Lituénigo
Curiosity
La Pesada de Lituénigo (Zaragoza) is held on the Sunday of the village's patronal festivities in honour of Saint Michael, the last weekend of September, and has been documented since 1295; the tradition may have arrived from the Pyrenees after the resettlement of the Reconquista and may be linked to the payment of tithes. It has three parts: la Llega, in which the stewards of the following year's festival collect wheat; the weighing of children born that year; and the auction of sacks of wheat, won by whoever secures the key without anyone else bidding further. Legend has it that a childless couple from Lituénigo asked friar Matías for a child, and the woman promised to offer as many sacks of wheat as the kilograms the child would weigh at birth. The tradition was declared a Fiesta de Interés Turístico de Aragón (official Spanish designation for festivals of tourist interest) in 1998.
Festivities of invierno de Lituénigo
Activity
The winter festivities of Lituénigo, with the minor celebrations in honour of Saint Blaise held on the first weekend of February, exist alongside the Pesada, a singular tradition of the Tarazona and Moncayo region documented since 1295 and declared a festival of tourist interest of Aragon in 1998: the mayordomos collect wheat, children born that year are weighed, and the wheat is auctioned off, during the festivities of San Miguel at the end of September.
