What to see and do in Torrellas

Torrellas
Village
Torrellas is a municipality of 249 inhabitants in the comarca of Tarazona y el Moncayo, on the banks of the Queiles river, where on 8 August 1304 the Arbitral Award of Torrellas was signed, settling the dispute between Castile and Aragon over the kingdom of Murcia, with the Segura river as the border line; the negotiation involved King Denis I of Portugal and the archbishop of Zaragoza, representing Aragon. A seigneurial town from the 13th century, in the early 15th century it headed the Barony of Torrellas, together with Los Fayos and Santa Cruz de Moncayo, until the disentailment. Its Muslim population, noted for woodcarving and marquetry, was expelled on 12 August 1610, when close to 2,000 people were banished and the village was left empty.

Arbitral award of Torrellas
Historical milestone
The Arbitral Award of Torrellas, signed on 8 August 1304 in this municipality of Zaragoza situated on Mount Moncayo, between the Castilian city of Ágreda and the Aragonese city of Tarazona, ended the dispute over the borders of the kingdom of Murcia between the crowns of Castile and Aragon, as well as resolving the claims to the Castilian-Leonese throne of Alfonso de la Cerda, grandson of Alfonso X the Wise. For this reason it is also known as the Concord of Ágreda or the Treaty of Tarazona. Its clauses, approved by Ferdinand IV of Castile, James II of Aragon, Denis I of Portugal and Muhammad III of Granada, left the Segura as the border: Aragon retained Alicante, Elche, Orihuela and Cartagena, while Castile kept Murcia and Lorca.
