What to see and do in Trasmoz

Trasmoz
Village
Trasmoz is a municipality in the province of Zaragoza, in the comarca of Tarazona y el Moncayo, situated at 765 metres above sea level on the slopes of the Moncayo, 13 kilometres from Tarazona. It has 88 inhabitants (INE 2025). It is the only village in Spain officially excommunicated by the Catholic Church, a sentence not yet revoked: in the 13th century, the occupants of its castle counterfeited coin and spread rumours of witchcraft to disguise the noise of the forge, while the lordship refused to pay tribute to the neighbouring monastery of Veruela on the grounds that it was secular territory; the abbot secured its excommunication, and its community, a mix of Jews, Christians and Arabs, never repented. The witch legends, retold by Bécquer, are celebrated every July at a fair of witchcraft and medicinal plants.
Trasmoz, the Cursed Village
Curiosity
The only village in Spain excommunicated by the Catholic Church in the 19th century, with a deep-rooted tradition of witch legends.
Castle of Trasmoz
Monument
A castle located near the Sierra del Moncayo, in one of the most disputed enclaves on the border between the kingdoms of Aragon and Navarre; it already existed in 1185, when the territory belonged to Navarre, and later passed to the Crown of Aragon through the mediation of Alfonso II. After the conquest of Navarre by Fernando II and the end of the noble disputes, it was abandoned. Hexagonal in plan, with towers from the 13th to the 15th centuries and a square keep at its centre, the oldest surviving element, it is the only excommunicated castle in Spain, linked to the legend of witchcraft in Trasmoz. Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer collected its legends in Cartas desde mi celda after staying at the guesthouse of the Monastery of Veruela.
