What to see and do in Pedrola

Pedrola
Village
Pedrola is a town in the comarca of Ribera Alta del Ebro, in the province of Zaragoza, with around 3,840 inhabitants, near the Ebro, at the centre of its depression. Its economy combines industry, driven by the nearby Opel plant in Figueruelas, with traditional agriculture. It preserves the church of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles and the palace of the Dukes of Villahermosa, joined by a passageway commissioned in the 16th century by Luisa de Borja y Aragón; both were declared a conjunto histórico-artístico (historic-artistic site, a former Spanish heritage-protection category) in 1976. The palace, Aragonese Mudéjar from the early 16th century, stands out for its wide balconies and preserves paintings by Roland de Mois, Tiepolo, Sorolla and Goya, among them the portrait of Ramón Pignatelli, linked to the genealogy of figures of Aragonese culture.
Orchards of the Ribera Alta del Ebro
Nature
The huerta (market-garden area) of the Ribera Alta del Ebro extends over the floodplain formed by this river as it passes through the Zaragoza district of the same name, between Alagón and Gallur, in the municipality of Pedrola. The economy of the district has traditionally relied on this irrigated farmland, located between the Ebro and its tributary the Jalón, although in recent decades industry has gained weight, with the Opel plant in the neighbouring Figueruelas.

Its centrepiece is the Ducal Palace of Villahermosa, built in the Aragonese Mudéjar style in brick in the early 16th century, and embellished by Martín de Gurrea y Aragón, fourth Duke of Villahermosa. It preserves a notable art collection with works by Goya, Tiepolo, Bayeu and Sorolla, Renaissance coffered ceilings, Sèvres porcelain and Gobelins tapestries, as well as a library and ballroom.
