What to see and do in Alcalá de Ebro

Alcalá de Ebro
Village
Alcalá de Ebro is a municipality of 244 inhabitants in the comarca of Ribera Alta del Ebro, in the province of Zaragoza, with a castle of Muslim origin that formed part of the defensive system of Zaragoza; after the conquest of the city in 1118 it passed to the House of Luna and, through marriage alliances, to the Dukes of Villahermosa, lords of neighbouring Pedrola. Miguel de Cervantes lodged there in the winter of 1568, as a page of Cardinal Julio Aguaviva; the knowledge he gained of Alcalá de Ebro, which with the river's floods seemed to turn into an island, helped him identify it with the island of Barataria governed by Sancho Panza in the second part of Don Quixote, from 1615, and the Dukes of Villahermosa with the lords of the island.
Church of Alcalá de Ebro
Monument
Parish church of Alcalá de Ebro, a municipality on the banks of the Ebro mentioned in Don Quixote, under the dedication of the Santísima Trinidad. According to the 19th-century description by Pascual Madoz, the church was served by a parish priest appointed by the Duke of Villahermosa, lord of the town, reflecting the patronage that the ducal house held over the parish.
Festivities of Alcalá de Ebro
Activity
Alcalá de Ebro celebrates its festival in the municipality that tradition identifies with the island of Barataria, which Cervantes had Sancho Panza govern in the second part of Don Quixote, published in 1615, owing to the island-like appearance the Ebro's floods gave it.
The isle of Barataria of Sancho Panza
Historical milestone
Tradition identifies Alcalá de Ebro with the island of Barataria that Cervantes had Sancho Panza govern in the second part of Don Quixote, published in 1615. The floods of the Ebro isolated the place and gave it for weeks the appearance of an island.
