What to see and do in Grisén

Grisén
Village
Grisén is a municipality in the Ribera Alta del Ebro, in the province of Zaragoza (Aragón), with 630 inhabitants (INE 2025). It preserves the walls of El Caracol, built in the 18th century, over which the Canal Imperial de Aragón runs to cross the bed of the río Jalón, as well as the parish church of San Martín, of masonry and brick, and the hermitage of San Miguel. It has a railway station, opened in 1863 by the M.Z.A. Company, and in 1965 was the scene of a serious rail disaster. Jueves Lardero (Fat Thursday) is a traditional local gathering day, and in November the feast of San Martín de Tours is celebrated.
Walls of El Caracol
Monument
The walls of El Caracol, in Grisén (Zaragoza), correspond to the Jalón aqueduct, the most representative work of the Canal Imperial de Aragón, built in the 18th century to cross the río Jalón, the greatest obstacle along the canal's route. It is a limestone ashlar aqueduct 60 metres long, formed by four arches with a 9.75-metre span separated by piers 3.75 metres thick; the whole structure extends for more than 2 kilometres, of which 1,380 metres run between stone walls. The site also preserves the spiral-staircase tower, the San Martín beacon and the Casa de las Paradas.
Festivities of San Miguel y San Martín de Grisén
Activity
Grisén (Zaragoza) has a double festive cycle in honour of its patron saints: San Miguel, on 29 September, whose hermitage is preserved in the village, and San Martín Obispo, on 11 November, a festival known locally as la brispa de San Martín de Tours.
Vegetables of the Jalón river plain
Food and drink
The huertas irrigated by the Jalón and the Ebro produce onion, tomato, pepper, potato and chickpea, the basis of the domestic recipe book of the comarca. A good part of the production goes to the central market of Zaragoza and to the canneries of the valley.
