What to see and do in Utebo

Utebo
Village
Utebo is a town and municipality in the Comarca Central of Aragón, of which it is the capital, in Zaragoza, with a notable Mudéjar tower. Situated 12 kilometres from Zaragoza, on the right bank of the Ebro, its municipal area is flat and two-thirds is farmland, mostly irrigated. The municipality is divided into three settlements: the Casco Antiguo, El Monte, developed since the 1940s, and the Barrio de Malpica. The place name comes from the Latin Octavus: it stood at the eighth mile of the Roman road between Caesar Augusta and Cascantum. After the reconquest of Zaragoza by Alfonso the Battler in 1118, Utebo became part of the Dominicatura de Zaragoza, fifteen villages subject to the capital. With 19,116 inhabitants (INE 2025), it is the third most populous municipality in the province.
Mudéjar Tower of Utebo
Monument
The Mudéjar tower of the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Utebo, built in 1544 entirely of brick with gypsum mortar, following the building tradition of Aragonese Mudéjar in the Ebro valley, is one of the most notable in Aragón and an emblematic example of the survival of this style. It ends in a spire that translates the Gothic pinnacles of the period into the Mudéjar tradition, and its fame was such that it was reproduced at the Pueblo Español de Barcelona.
Church of Utebo
Monument
Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, a Gothic-Mudéjar church with Baroque additions built in the early 16th century (1510-1521) over an earlier medieval church. Its tower, the work of Alonso de Leznes and completed in 1544, is one of the gems of Aragonese Mudéjar and is known as the "tower of mirrors" for the small glazed tiles that reflect the light.
Festivities of Utebo
Activity
Utebo celebrates its patron saint festivities in honour of San Lamberto, patron of Aragonese farmers, from 14 to 19 June; the municipality also celebrates San Juan (23-25 June) and Santa Ana (25-30 July).
Industrial chocolate of Utebo
Food and drink
Utebo houses one of the largest chocolate and turrón factories in Spain, heir to the Zaragoza chocolate-making tradition. The industry transforms cocoa and almond and supplies chocolates and bars to the whole national market from the bank of the Ebro.
