What to see and do in Cadrete

Cadrete
Village
Cadrete is a municipality in the Comarca Central of Zaragoza, in the Huerva valley, with 4,688 inhabitants (2025). It was founded in the 10th century as an Arab settlement — Qadrit, from which its name derives — with a castle atop a hill overlooking the river and a medieval settlement with its old mosque, converted into a Moorish-style church after the Christian conquest of Zaragoza in 1118, when the people of Cadrete came under the Crown of Aragon without losing their mosques, judges or laws; the population remained Moorish until the expulsion of 1610. Its economy, a mix of industry and agriculture, is notable for the cultivation of the white cardoon, prized in cooking. Through its territory runs the green river corridor linking it with Cuarte de Huerva and María de Huerva before reaching the Ebro.

The Huerva rises in the sierra de Cucalón and flows for 128 km to its mouth, with a catchment area of 1,020 km², an average flow of 0.84 m³/s and an annual contribution of 67 hm³. As it passes through the Aragonese capital, in the 1920s and 1930s it was decided to cover its course to make way for the construction of streets.
