What to see and do in Biota

Biota
Village
Biota is a municipality of the Zaragoza Cinco Villas, on the banks of the Arba de Luesia river and 96 kilometres from Zaragoza, which since 1971 has included the former municipal area of Malpica de Arba. The settlement arose in 1091 around a castle that controlled a ford of the Arba, of which today only a tower survives, attached to what was the Palacio del Vizconde de Biota, built from 1772 by Matías Landáburu after buying the title from the counts of Aranda; the building passed to the town council in 1995. The parish church, Romanesque, is dedicated to San Miguel Arcángel, patron of the village. It has 832 inhabitants (INE 2025) and is one of the villages of the Cinco Villas where tortas de manteca and de rodilla, stuffed tortas de alma, and Easter culecas are made.
Church of Biota
Monument
Church of San Miguel Arcángel, patron saint of the town, in Romanesque style and from the 12th century, with a single nave and sculpted decoration on the south and west portals attributed to the Master of San Juan de la Peña. It houses a parish museum with liturgical pieces from various periods, including a work by Vicente Berdusán dedicated to San Acacio.
Lard cakes and knee-kneaded cakes
Food and drink
The oven confectionery of the Cinco Villas preserves the lard cakes and those called de rodilla, kneaded on the thigh, together with the filled tortas de alma and the culecas of Easter. They are made in the bakeries of Biota, Sádaba and Uncastillo.
