What to see and do in Castiliscar

Castiliscar
Village
Castiliscar is a municipality of 219 inhabitants in the Cinco Villas region, in the province of Zaragoza, situated on the slope of the sierra de Santa Águeda, a spur of the Aragonese Pre-Pyrenees, at an altitude of 493 metres. It is documented from May 1088, when the Aragonese king Sancho Ramírez authorised the lord of Sos, Galindo Sánchez, to convert an existing tower on the site into a castle, in order to consolidate the resettlement and defence of the area; from that 'castillo de Liscarre' comes the village's present name. Its church of San Juan Bautista, Romanesque from the 12th century, holds a 4th-century paleo-Christian alabaster sarcophagus converted into a high altar. The municipality is irrigated by the Canal de las Bardenas, built in 1959 with the waters of the Aragón river dammed at Yesa.

Church of San Juan Bautista, from the 12th century, in advanced Romanesque style with Cistercian influence, with a pointed barrel-vaulted nave and a semicircular apse. As its main altar it preserves an Early Christian alabaster sarcophagus from around the year 340, with biblical scenes such as the Adoration of the Magi and the resurrection of Lazarus, one of the best-preserved pieces of its kind in Spain.
