What to see and do in Longás

Longás
Village
Longás is a small municipality in the north of the Cinco Villas, in the province of Zaragoza, with barely 36 inhabitants, situated at about 840 metres of altitude at the head of the valley of the river Onsella, next to the sierra de Santo Domingo, on the very foothills of the Aragonese Pre-Pyrenees. Documented as Longareç in a charter of 938, it preserves a stone hamlet with Gothic and Renaissance manor houses and the church of Santa María, from the 14th century, with an octagonal bell tower. For centuries its characteristic resource was the extraction of pitch, from which comes the nickname of its inhabitants, «peceros». From the highest point of the sierra de Santo Domingo one can see both the plain of the Cinco Villas and the La Peña reservoir, in a setting of hiking and mountain-biking routes.
Church of Longás
Monument
Church of Santa María, from the 14th century with Gothic and Renaissance elements, with a cruciform plan, a polygonal apse and star vaulting; its slender octagonal bell tower, with an interior spiral staircase, may have had a defensive origin. It preserves a Plateresque altarpiece dedicated to San Miguel.
