What to see and do in Villadoz

Villadoz
Village
Villadoz is a municipality in the comarca of Campo de Daroca, in the province of Zaragoza, situated at 900 metres above sea level on the plateau of Campo Romanos, at the foot of the sierra del Peco, within the Aragonese Iberian System. The name, documented as Villadolz until 1609, comes from the Latin dulce ('sweet'), a nuance added to attract resettlers after the Reconquista, as also happened in Villarreal de Huerva or Villahermosa del Campo. Its parish church of Santiago Apóstol preserves a tower in Aragonese Mudéjar style and a 15th-century Gothic altarpiece; the place became independent of Daroca in 1248 by privilege of James I. Alongside the village runs the río Huerva, which forms an extensive riverside grove of poplars, willows and ash trees, in whose surroundings wild boar, roe deer and wildcats live.
Church of Villadoz
Monument
Church of Saint James the Apostle in Villadoz, with a Mudejar-style tower and a 15th-century Gothic altarpiece; it underwent a complete restoration in 2006. It was built after 1248, the year in which Villadoz was founded as an independent settlement, and its tower is an example of Aragonese Mudejar art, which combines Christian and Islamic building traditions.
