What to see and do in Mainar

Mainar
Village
Mainar is a municipality in the Campo de Daroca, in the province of Zaragoza, with 162 inhabitants, at 868 metres above sea level, flat in relief to the south and mountainous to the north, where the sierra de los Bodegones and the sierra de la Dehesilla join the sierra de Algairén. The río Huerva runs through its territory, marking the border with Villarreal de Huerva, as do the arroyo Villarroya and the arroyo Villarpardo, drainage channels of medieval origin dug in the 12th and 13th centuries that still irrigate the area. The village was repopulated in the 12th century after the conquest of Alfonso I. In 1668 it was visited by Cosimo III de' Medici, whose draughtsman Pier Maria Baldi painted a panorama of the village now held in the Biblioteca Laurenziana in Florence. It preserves the Mudéjar church of Santa Ana, from the 16th century, and a bridge from the time of Trajan shared with Villarreal de Huerva.
Church of Mainar
Monument
Church of Santa Ana, from the 16th century, with one of the finest Mudejar towers in Aragon; it preserves 17th- and 18th-century altarpieces and 15th- and 16th-century wood sculptures. In the early 1980s it was looted by the antiques dealer Erik the Belgian, although some of the pieces were later recovered; its most valuable carving, a San Blas from around 1400-1450, was never stolen.
