What to see and do in Fuendetodos

Fuendetodos
Village
Fuendetodos is a municipality in the province of Zaragoza, in the Campo de Belchite district, 44 km southwest of the capital, with 130 inhabitants. It is the birthplace of the painter Francisco de Goya: the house where he was born, built in the early 18th century, is preserved next to the Museo del Grabado, opened in 1989, devoted to his graphic work. From the 14th century it was the domain of the Fernández de Heredia family, counts of Fuentes. It lived off dryland farming, livestock and, for centuries, the exploitation of caracoleña stone from its quarries and the ice industry, with 22 ice pits. Today it receives about 20,000 visitors a year.
Goya's Birthplace
Monument
The Casa Natal de Goya, in Fuendetodos (Zaragoza), is the house where the painter Francisco de Goya was born in 1746, and today functions as a museum, with furniture and household items in the Aragonese style, reproductions of his works and documentation about his life. After the painter's birth it passed through various hands and became the village inn, until in 1913 Ignacio Zuloaga and other artists located a plaque identifying it; Zuloaga bought it in 1916. In 1982 it was declared a national historic-artistic monument and its restoration began; the museum opened to the public in 1985. It is a house of typical village construction, with three floors joined by a staircase, and in 1996 an annexed temporary exhibition hall was inaugurated.

Birth of Francisco de Goya
Historical milestone
Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes was born in Fuendetodos on 30 March 1746, in his mother's family house, while his parents were living temporarily in the village; he died in Bordeaux on 16 April 1828. A painter and printmaker, his work evolved from rococo, through neoclassicism, to pre-romanticism, always with an undercurrent of naturalism and a strong ethical rather than aesthetic message; he is considered one of the most important Spanish artists and a forerunner of several 20th-century avant-garde movements. Among his outstanding works are the Desastres de la guerra, the paintings of the Dos de Mayo de 1808, the Maja desnuda, the Disparates and the Pinturas negras from the Quinta del Sordo. The town preserves the painter's birth house and commemorates the anniversary of his birth every year.
Ice houses and the ice trade

Lordship of the Counts of Fuentes
