Birth of Francisco de Goya Historical milestone · Fuendetodos, Campo de Belchite, Zaragoza Image of Fuendetodos, not of the place itself. Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes was born in Fuendetodos on 30 March 1746, in his mother's family house, while his parents were living temporarily in the village; he died in Bordeaux on 16 April 1828. A painter and printmaker, his work evolved from rococo, through neoclassicism, to pre-romanticism, always with an undercurrent of naturalism and a strong ethical rather than aesthetic message; he is considered one of the most important Spanish artists and a forerunner of several 20th-century avant-garde movements. Among his outstanding works are the Desastres de la guerra, the paintings of the Dos de Mayo de 1808, the Maja desnuda, the Disparates and the Pinturas negras from the Quinta del Sordo. The town preserves the painter's birth house and commemorates the anniversary of his birth every year. 1746 Photo: El Justicia de Aragón (CC0) What to see and do in Fuendetodos
