What to see and do in Almonacid de la Cuba

Almonacid de la Cuba
Village
Almonacid de la Cuba is a municipality of 220 inhabitants (INE 2025), situated at 488 metres above sea level in the Campo de Belchite (Zaragoza). Its name describes its origin as a religious building: Almonacid comes from the Latin monasterium via the Arabic al-munastir, and La Cuba, from the Latin cupula via the Arabic qubba, which also denoted domed funerary monuments. In the 19th century it became known as Almonacid de las Horcas because of its intense production of farming pitchforks. It preserves a large mortar dam about a hundred varas long, possibly of Roman or medieval origin, attributed to the time of James I, as well as the church of Santa María la Mayor and several hermitages. It holds a Roman fair in mid-June and its patron saint festivities in honour of San Roque on 16 August.
Roman Dam of Almonacid de la Cuba
Monument
The Roman dam of Almonacid de la Cuba is a 1st-century gravity dam situated on the río Aguasvivas, in the Campo de Belchite. At 34 metres high, it is the tallest Roman dam preserved anywhere in the world. It was built in the time of the emperor Augustus and was repaired on multiple occasions, although it stood abandoned for a period in the second half of the 1st century; it has been suggested that it formed part of the water supply for the settlement of the Pueyo de Belchite. Because of the silting up of its reservoir, it ended up being used as a weir to divert flows to the irrigated land around Belchite through a canal, also of Roman origin, 8 kilometres long, a function it still performs today.

Steppe landscape of Almonacid de la Cuba
Nature
Almonacid de la Cuba sits on the slope of the gorge carved by the river Aguasvivas as it passes through the sierra de Belchite, amid a steppe landscape. The contrast between the white limestone of the mountains and the riverside vegetation and the valley's symmetrical market gardens can be seen from the mirador del Mojón del Lobo, next to the well-preserved 1st-century Roman dam, 34 metres high.
