Roman Dam of Almonacid de la Cuba Monument · Almonacid de la Cuba, Campo de Belchite, Zaragoza The Roman dam of Almonacid de la Cuba is a 1st-century gravity dam situated on the río Aguasvivas, in the Campo de Belchite. At 34 metres high, it is the tallest Roman dam preserved anywhere in the world. It was built in the time of the emperor Augustus and was repaired on multiple occasions, although it stood abandoned for a period in the second half of the 1st century; it has been suggested that it formed part of the water supply for the settlement of the Pueyo de Belchite. Because of the silting up of its reservoir, it ended up being used as a weir to divert flows to the irrigated land around Belchite through a canal, also of Roman origin, 8 kilometres long, a function it still performs today.
