What to see and do in Ródenas

Ródenas
Village
A small municipality in the Sierra de Albarracín, in Teruel, which in 1257 passed by privilege of James I to the Sesma de Bronchales, within the Comunidad de Santa María de Albarracín, directly dependent on the king; this community is the only one that has remained alive since the 1837 dissolution decree, with its seat today in Tramacastilla. Its fortress, on the northern edge of the sierra, had García Fernández de Heredia as alcaide between 1301 and 1315, under James II, father of Juan Fernández de Heredia, future Grand Master of the Order of St John in Rhodes, who after living here joined the Order at the Commandery of Villel. It preserves the church of Santa Catalina Mártir, from the 16th century, the hermitage of la Virgen de los Poyales and a cistern of ashlar rodeno stone. It has 57 inhabitants (INE 2025).

Festivities of Ródenas
Activity
The festivities of Ródenas are celebrated in a municipality whose fortress, at the northern edge of the Sierra de Albarracín, had García Fernández de Heredia as its warden (alcaide) between 1301 and 1315, under Jaime II; it retained its rights over the communal patrimony when the Comunidad de Santa María de Albarracín was exempted from the 1837 decree that dissolved the Aragonese communities of villages.
García Fernández de Heredia, castellan of the castle
Historical milestone
Between 1301 and 1315 García Fernández de Heredia acted as warden of the fortress of Ródenas under Jaime II of Aragon. The post reflects the strategic value of this enclave on the northern limit of the sierra.
The 1837 exception in the dissolution of the communities
Historical milestone
The decree of 1837 dissolved the Aragonese comunidades de aldeas, but that of Santa María de Albarracín was exempted and continued to manage the communal patrimony of its villages. Ródenas was one of the municipalities that maintained those rights.
