Villar del Salz
Village
Villar del Salz is a small municipality in the Jiloca district, in the province of Teruel, 60.4 kilometres from the capital and at 1,219 metres above sea level, with 58 inhabitants. In 1248, by privilege of James I, it separated from Daroca and joined the Sesma del Río Jiloca, within the Comunidad de Aldeas de Daroca, under direct royal administration until the death of Ferdinand VII in 1833. It preserves the hermitage of Santa Águeda and the parish church of the Ascensión de Nuestra Señora. Its festivities, in honour of its patron Santa Bárbara, are held in the second half of August; the most notable day is that of the poyales, the Monday of the festivities, when residents travel to the neighbouring village of Ródenas for a picnic and then have lunch in a riverside grove near Villar, carrying the image of the patron saint at all times.
