Almohaja
Village
Almohaja is a small municipality of the Comunidad de Teruel, with only 10 inhabitants over 25.55 km², terraced on the slope of a hillock above a small valley with a lagoon now almost dry, at about 1,200 metres above sea level, surrounded by red-sandstone (rodeno) ravines with archaeological remains. Its name comes from the Arabic al-muḥajja, “causeway” or “royal road.” In 1248, by privilege of James I, it broke away from direct dependence on Daroca and passed into the sesma of Jiloca, under royal jurisdiction until the death of Ferdinand VII in 1833. Opposite the village runs the route of the old mining railway from Ojos Negros to Puerto de Sagunto, through which the municipality is part of the Ojos Negros Mines Cultural Park.
