What to see and do in Peracense

Peracense
Village
Peracense is a municipality in the Jiloca district, in the province of Teruel, situated 52 kilometres from the capital, with 68 inhabitants. Its name has evolved from medieval forms such as Piedrasolez or Perasenz, which allude to the rugged, rocky landscape surrounding it. Historical documentation centres on its imposing castle, built on a crag of red sandstone at the end of the Sierra Menera, which played a notable role in the wars with Castile during the Middle Ages; at its foot lie the remains of a settlement of fourteen dwellings. In the town centre stands the church of San Pedro, from 1740, with an ashlar tower nearly thirty metres high. Near Alba del Campo stands the thousand-year-old holm oak known as the carrasca de los Tocones, about 500 years old.
Castle of Peracense
Monument
The castle of Peracense, carved into the red sandstone rock that gives it its name, is one of the most singular and best-preserved fortresses in Aragon: it stands on a steep rocky outcrop, a southern extension of the Sierra Menera, next to the Cerro de San Ginés, overlooking the Jiloca valley. The site was already occupied at the end of the Bronze Age and again in the 10th and 11th centuries, in Muslim times. It formed part of the defensive system of the Taifa of Albarracín until, around 1170, it passed into the hands of Pedro Ruiz de Azagra, remaining under Navarrese rule until Peter III of Aragon conquered it in 1284. Due to its frontier position between Castile, Aragon and the neighbouring lordships, it gained great strategic importance in the Late Middle Ages and was enlarged throughout the 14th century, as one of the strongholds of the border with Castile.
Church of Peracense
Monument
