What to see and do in Jabaloyas

Jabaloyas
Village
Jabaloyas is a municipality in the Sierra de Albarracín, in the province of Teruel, situated at 1,405 metres above sea level and made up, besides the town of the same name, of the settlement of Arroyofrío. Its name comes from the Arabic ğabal, "mountain", and means "mountain of the hollows". The most notable geographical feature is Mount Javalón, at 1,692 metres, whose summit offers wide views and where the hermitage of San Cristóbal, the village's patron, stands. The church of la Asunción dates from the 15th-16th centuries. In 1257, by privilege of James I, the place became part of the Sesma de Jabaloyas, one of the four that made up the Comunidad de Santa María de Albarracín, whose current seat is in Tramacastilla.
Church of Jabaloyas
Monument
The church of the Asunción de Jabaloyas is a 15th- and 16th-century parish church, with a bell tower and an exterior atrium also from the 16th century. It already appears documented in the mid-19th century in Pascual Madoz's geographical dictionary, which describes it as a parish church served by a cura de término (senior-rank priest).
Festivities of Jabaloyas
Activity
The festivities of Jabaloyas centre on the pilgrimage (romería) of San Cristóbal, the village's patron saint, held every 10 July, which climbs up to the hermitage raised on the summit of Mount Javalón, at 1695 metres of altitude. It is a simple building of traditional construction, with hardly any ornament beyond the bell-gable (espadaña) added in the 2009 restoration; its origin is uncertain, although Madoz already mentioned it in the mid-19th century. In the past people climbed on foot or on the backs of decorated mounts, and some devotees climbed barefoot as an offering; today it is reached by vehicle along the Alobras track. The day includes mass and a procession with the image of the saint, followed by a communal meal.
