What to see and do in Gea de Albarracín

Gea de Albarracín
Village
Gea de Albarracín is a municipality in the Sierra de Albarracín, in Teruel, at 1,031 metres above sea level, on the banks of the río Guadalaviar, called the río Turia further downstream, in the Valencian Community. Until 20 August 1610 it was a very important Arab village in the comarca, with about 2,340 inhabitants; on that day 2,260 Moriscos were expelled, leaving together with those of Teruel and Bezas for the port of Los Alfaques, and the place was resettled by Navarrese, Castilian, Valencian, Catalan and Andalusian Christians. Since 2010 the Asociación El Solanar de Gea has re-enacted that event on the last weekend of July. The municipality preserves a 1st-century Roman aqueduct cut into the rock, on the road to Albarracín, and part of its territory forms part of the Pinares de Rodeno protected landscape.

Expulsion of the Moriscos from Gea
Historical milestone

The Roman aqueduct from Gea to Albarracín
Historical milestone
The Roman aqueduct of Albarracín-Cella, also known as that of Albarracín-Gea-Cella, runs some 25 kilometres through the districts of Albarracín, Gea de Albarracín and Cella, in the Sierra de Albarracín (Teruel). Surviving from the 1st century is the section cut into the rock which, in the district of Gea, overcame very difficult terrain to bring water from the Guadalaviar river to the area around Albarracín and, beyond that, to the settlement that once existed at what is now Cella; its construction required work on several fronts simultaneously. It is one of the most important public hydraulic works of Roman Aragon, together with the Muel dam and the Los Bañales aqueduct, and it was declared Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) with monument status in 2002.
