What to see and do in Miravete de la Sierra

Miravete de la Sierra
Village
Miravete de la Sierra is one of the smallest municipalities in the Maestrazgo, with 31 inhabitants at 1,218 metres above sea level, at the foot of the Sierra de Lastra and on the upper course of the Guadalope river, overlooked by Mount San Cristóbal. Recaptured from the Arabs by Alfonso I the Battler, in 1175 it was transferred by Alfonso II of Aragon to the Military Order of Montjoie, which in 1188 merged into the Order of the Hospital of the Holy Redeemer of Teruel. In 1273 the lady of the place sold her rights to the bishop of Zaragoza for 1,350 gold maravedís, and from then on Miravete was a town under archiepiscopal lordship, whose inhabitants enjoyed, in exchange for an annual tribute, grazing privileges in Aliaga and in the Kingdom of Valencia. Its Baroque hermitage of San Cristóbal dates from 1779.
Church of Miravete de la Sierra
Monument
The church of Miravete de la Sierra, dedicated to Our Lady of the Snows, is a clear example of late Gothic style. In front of its main façade is an enclosed courtyard in the manner of a cloister, with pointed arches, and a passage links it to the calle del Palillo. It stands on the plaza de la Iglesia, fronted by the Casas Consistoriales, which have an L-shaped market hall, in one of the smallest municipalities of the Maestrazgo.

The winter festival of Miravete de la Sierra, one of the smallest municipalities in the Maestrazgo, is held beside its parish church, amid hives producing rosemary and wildflower honey.
Rosemary and thousand-flower honey
Food and drink
The hives of the sierra produce rosemary and thousand-flower honey that is packaged by hand and accompanies the local confectionery. The short flowering at these altitudes limits the harvest and concentrates the aromas.
