What to see and do in Pitarque

Pitarque
Village
Pitarque is a mountain municipality in the province of Teruel, in the comarca of the Maestrazgo, situated at 999 metres above sea level at the foot of the mountain of Peñarrubia. It has 62 inhabitants. Beside the village rises the Pitarque river, a tributary of the Guadalope, from a karstic resurgence that forms waterfalls of great height and is declared a natural monument; nearby are also the Órganos de Montoro, a limestone formation from the Cretaceous. Its name may derive from the Arabic Abu-Tariq, “father of the irrigation channel”, and there is documentary evidence of the place since 1214; the parish church stands on the site of the old Arab citadel. After centuries of farming, livestock raising and water mills, it now lives largely on the ecotourism drawn by the river canyon, with its vultures, eagles and wild goats.
Source of the Pitarque River
Nature
The natural monument of the Source of the Río Pitarque protects 114 hectares around the source of the river, in the municipality of Pitarque (comarca of Maestrazgo, Teruel), between 1,010 and 1,450 metres in altitude. It was declared as such on 15 December 2009. The water emerges, with a flow of close to 1,500 litres per second, from a karstic aquifer formed in Upper Cretaceous limestone, marl and clay, at a point also known as the Ojo de la Fuente; after heavy rain it can also gush from a nearby chimney, forming a waterfall. The riverside vegetation, with willows and black poplars, gives way on the slopes to Portuguese oaks and box, while the waters are home to common trout and the European otter, and vultures nest and wild goats graze on the limestone cliffs.
Festivities of Pitarque
Activity
Patron saint festivities of Pitarque on the first weekend of October, in honour of the Virgen del Rosario, ending with a pilgrimage to the hermitage of the Virgen de la Peña. On 29 June a pilgrimage for San Pedro is also held.
Festivities of invierno de Pitarque
Activity
Pitarque's winter festival is held beside the Monumento Natural of the source of the river Pitarque, declared in 2009, where water rises from two large springs within 114 protected hectares.
Trout of the rivers of the Maestrazgo
Food and drink
The cold waters of the Pitarque and the Guadalope breed trout that are prepared grilled, in escabeche or stuffed with ham. It is one of the few fish with a tradition of its own in an inland and mountain comarca.
