What to see and do in Burbáguena

Burbáguena
Village
Burbáguena is a municipality in the province of Teruel, in the Jiloca comarca, with 396 inhabitants, on the banks of the Jiloca river, at 814 m above sea level. In 1248, by privilege of James I, it broke away from Daroca and joined the Sesma del Río Jiloca. The town centre preserves Aragonese Renaissance buildings from the 16th and 17th centuries, among them a palace of the Marquis of Montemuzo. The mudéjar tower of the parish church of Our Lady of the Angels, from the 18th century, slender and built of brick, dominates the town, beside the ruins of a 12th-century castle of which stretches of wall and three towers remain. The main festivals, in honour of San Pedro Mártir and San Bernabé, are held in the third week of August with the traditional descent of the river by boat.

Festivities of Burbáguena
Activity
The patron saint festivities of Burbáguena, in the Jiloca comarca (Teruel), have Saint Peter Martyr as patron saint, whose feast day is 29 April, although the town's main festival is celebrated in honour of Saint Barnabas the third week of August, moved from its liturgical date of 11 June. One of its most characteristic traditions is the descent of the Jiloca river, in which participants build improvised boats to sail along the riverbed; it has been documented since 1991 and takes place on the Friday of the festival week. The feast of Saint Anthony is also celebrated on 17 January, and there are hermitages dedicated to various saints around the town.
Privilege of 1248 and the sesma of the Jiloca river
Historical milestone
In 1248 a privilege of Jaime I released these villages from dependence on Daroca and integrated them into the sesma of the river Jiloca, within the Comunidad de Aldeas. The regime was maintained under royal jurisdiction until 1833.

Food and drink
The white beans irrigated with water from the Jiloca are stewed with hunted hare in a winter dish typical of the vega. The same irrigated land gives borage and vegetables that complete the spoon-dish recipe book of the comarca.
