What to see and do in Villanueva de Jiloca

Villanueva de Jiloca
Village
Villanueva de Jiloca is a municipality in the Campo de Daroca situated in the valley of the río Jiloca, among rugged hills dotted with pine groves, poplar plantations and vineyards. In 1248, by privilege of James I, it broke away from Daroca and passed to the Sesma del Campo de Gallocanta, a regime in force until 1838. The village stands at 768 metres, and its houses grew towards the ravine that crosses it, with orchards irrigated by two ditches; to the south, space was set aside for the town hall, the bakehouse, the market hall, the poorhouse hospital and the jail. On the main square there is a Renaissance fountain, fed by a spring through clay pipes, built in 1557 by the Cantabrian stonemason Juan de la Peña. The village was the worst affected by the Jiloca floods of 1901. It has 73 inhabitants (INE 2025).
