What to see and do in San Martín del Río

San Martín del Río
Village
San Martín del Río is a municipality in the Jiloca district, in the province of Teruel, with 135 inhabitants (INE 2025), located in the fertile valley of the river that gives it its name, whose historic irrigation still produces apples, pears and vegetables in small market gardens; already in the 19th century the valley's pome fruit was counted among the finest in the kingdom, alongside the cultivation of vines, almond trees and cherry trees, likewise central to the life of the village. In 1248, by privilege of James I, the place became independent of Daroca and joined the Sesma del Campo de Gallocanta, within the Comunidad de Aldeas de Daroca, dissolved in 1838; in the mid-19th century it had 910 inhabitants, a figure that reached 1,338 at the start of the 20th century.
Mudéjar Tower of San Martín del Río
Monument
The tower of the church of San Martín obispo, on the main square, has a Gothic, square, rubble-masonry lower section, topped by four octagonal brick sections built between 1600 and 1606, with buttresses at every corner and relief Mudejar decoration. It is one of the great towers of late Teruel Mudejar work and was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Property of Cultural Interest, Spain's top heritage-protection category since the 1985 Heritage Law) in December 2001, but it is not on the World Heritage list.
Church of San Martín del Río
Monument
The church of San Martín Obispo, whose tower on the plaza Mayor combines a first Gothic masonry stage with four octagonal brick stages raised between 1600 and 1606, is a late Gothic temple built between the 16th and 18th centuries. It has a single nave of four bays with a star-ribbed vault and side chapels in the same style, and in the 18th century it was enriched with green and white stucco decoration of Rococo character. It houses an organ built in 1755 by Silvestre Thomas in his workshop in Zaragoza, restored since 1988; it is the centrepiece of the summer concerts of the Curso de Música Antigua de Daroca, held since 1979 in tribute to the organist Pablo Bruna, the blind man of Daroca.

Food and drink
The descriptions of the nineteenth century already highlighted the pome fruit of the valley as highly prized throughout the kingdom. The historical irrigation of the Jiloca still produces apple, pear and vegetables in huertas of small extension.
