Tornos
Village
Tornos is a municipality in the Jiloca district, in the province of Teruel, with 175 inhabitants (INE 2025), situated over a thousand metres above sea level next to the Gallocanta lagoon, with long winters and summer nights among the coldest in Spain. Documented since 1204, it was part of the Comunidad de Aldeas de Daroca until James I separated it from that jurisdiction in 1248. During the Peninsular War it was a point of retreat for Spanish troops commanded by Colonel Ramón Gayán after being dislodged from the Virgen del Águila. It preserves the Baroque church of El Salvador, from the 18th century, remains of the towers of its castle and the hermitage of the Virgen de los Olmos, at whose August festivities the revolvedera is danced.
