What to see and do in Báguena

Báguena
Village
Báguena is a municipality in the Teruel comarca of the Jiloca, on the banks of the river of the same name and 91 kilometres from the city of Teruel. Its name, first documented in 1205, comes from the Latin vacuus, “empty” or “deserted”; the first settlers arrived here in the third quarter of the 12th century, when Ramon Berenguer IV was repopulating Daroca and its district. In 1248, by privilege of James I, Báguena broke away from Daroca's dependency by joining the Community of Villages of Daroca. It is, moreover, a municipality of this comarca where the pig slaughter yields loin, ribs and longaniza sausage, fried and preserved in clay jars covered in oil, taken out all year round as a snack or as a base for stews.
Mudéjar Tower of Báguena
Monument
Mudejar brick tower built in 1609 by Pedro de Aguilera, for fifteen thousand Jaca sueldos, beside the parish church of Santa María, built in 1403 by the master builder Pascual de Exulve and extended in the 17th century. It is one of the examples of late Mudejar work in the Jiloca valley; it does not form part of the UNESCO-listed serial property of Aragonese Mudejar architecture.
Church of Báguena
Monument
Church of Santa María, built in 1403 by the master builder Pascual de Exulve and later extended; next to it stands the Mudejar brick tower, erected in 1609, the work of Pedro de Aguilera.
Festivities of Báguena
Activity
Báguena (Jiloca, Teruel) has three major religious festivities. San Blas has been the village's patron since the Concejo General instituted the feast in perpetuity in 1643; its celebration includes a bonfire the night before and processions on the feast day. On 31 August San Ramón Nonato is celebrated, once a feast of the young unmarried men and today the village's main festival. Second in importance is that of the Santo Cristo de los Milagros, organised by the elected officers of its confraternity.
Oil-preserved longaniza sausage, pork loin and ribs
Food and drink
The slaughter leaves loin, ribs and longaniza fried and covered in oil in earthenware jars, a method of preservation earlier than industrial refrigeration. They are taken out throughout the year as a mid-morning meal or as the base of stews.
