Castle of Mora de Rubielos Monument · Mora de Rubielos, Gúdar-Javalambre, Teruel The castle of Mora de Rubielos, one of the best preserved in Aragon and dated to 1198, stands on a hill of the sierra de Gúdar (Teruel), next to the former collegiate church and the plaza mayor. Of Muslim origin, it was conquered by Alfonso II of Aragon in 1171 and later became the scene of border disputes between Castile and Aragon; in the 18th century it was occupied by Franciscan friars. It occupies a 4,000-square-metre enclosure of irregular polygonal plan, built of ashlar stone laid in horizontal courses, with Romanesque and Gothic elements and pointed arches of Muslim influence. Inside, coats of arms of the Fernández de Heredia family are preserved. It was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1931.
