What to see and do in Martín del Río

Martín del Río
Village
Martín del Río is a municipality of the Cuencas Mineras, in the province of Teruel, situated at 909 metres above sea level in the Teruel Iberian System, beside the río Martín, which rises within its territory from the union of the ríos de las Parras, de la Rambla and Vivel. Its name, documented in the 12th century as Martín, gained the addition of del Río in the 18th century to distinguish it from another town of the same name in Salamanca. At El Pajazo, Visigothic burials and a medieval Andalusi necropolis have been found, together with the remains of a fortress, testifying to continuous occupation until, in the mid-12th century, the area was conquered by the Kingdom of Aragon under Ramón Berenguer IV. Its patronal festivities, San Fabián and San Sebastián, are held on the Saturday closest to 20 January. It has 367 inhabitants.
Church of Martín del Río
Monument
Church of la Asunción de Nuestra Señora, a Baroque basilica-plan church built in the first half of the 18th century by master builders Mateo Colás and Juan José Nadal. It suffered severe damage in the Civil War, and the collapse of its dome in the 1950s forced its closure; it was restored from the late 1970s onward with local participation.
Festivities of Martín del Río
Activity
The festivities of Martín del Río are celebrated on the Saturday closest to 20 January, in honor of San Fabián and San Sebastián, with the traditional round of musicians through the houses of the town, followed by an auction and a bonfire.
Bread and wine sopeta

Mixture of crumbled bread, red wine and sugar that was eaten as an afternoon snack or dessert in the houses of farm labourers and miners. It is one of the simplest and most persistent preparations of the domestic recipe book of the basin.
