What to see and do in Escucha

Escucha
Village
Escucha is a mining town of the Teruel Cuencas Mineras, with 788 inhabitants (INE 2025), situated in the foothills of the sierra de San Just, at 1072 metres above sea level, on an anticline with important lignite deposits. Coal extraction shaped its history: in the 20th century it allowed the installation of a thermoelectric power station, in operation between 1970 and 2012, with an output of 160 MW, although it was one of the most polluting plants in Europe. Today the town preserves a mining museum that allows visitors to descend into a real mine 200 metres deep, a testimony to this century-old activity already documented by Pascual Madoz in 1845.
Mining Museum of Escucha
Monument
The Escucha Mining Museum, near this town in Teruel, allows visitors to descend into a genuine coal mine 200 metres deep: the old lignite mine called Se Verá, one of the few mining museums housed in an actual mine restored for visits. Worked from the late 19th century, first by the company of the Argüelles brothers and later by the Empresa Nacional Calvo Sotelo until its closure in 1968, it opened as a museum space in 2002. Visitors, equipped with helmet, lamp and self-rescuer, descend in mine carts to the interior, where two galleries show the timbering systems, with metal frames and traditional wooden props; the visit ends at a natural coal seam.
Festivities of Escucha
Activity
The patron saint festivities of Escucha are held on 24 and 25 June in honour of San Juan Bautista.
Mountain range of San Just
Nature
A mountain range of the Iberian System that closes the mining basin to the south, formed by a set of structural reliefs extending from west to east, with Cretaceous summits levelled between 1400 and 1500 metres and the Cabezo de la Trinidad as its highest point, at 1547; its steep escarpments overlook the coal-mining villages, and its surfaces link laterally with the high plains of the Llanos de Visiedo, the Altos del Zancado and Ejulve. In its district, near Utrillas, fossiliferous Albian amber has appeared, in which several new species have been described.
The end of coal mining
Historical milestone
After reaching in 1981 a record production of more than five million tonnes, the basin closed its last underground mine in 1991 and its opencast workings in 2003. The restructuring left mining museums and a heavy loss of population.
Mushrooms and saffron milk-caps of the Sierra de San Just
Food and drink
The pine forests of the sierra give in autumn rebollones, king trumpet mushrooms and other species that are prepared grilled or scrambled with egg. The gathering is a seasonal activity deeply rooted in the surrounding villages.
