What to see and do in La Hoz de la Vieja

La Hoz de la Vieja
Village
La Hoz de la Vieja, in the Cuencas Mineras (Teruel), has 85 inhabitants (2025) and its town centre stands at 931 metres above sea level, at the foot of a fortress tower, in the sierra de Cucalón. Its name refers to the red Triassic materials —formerly called Rubiel or Rubiello— and to the gorge that the río de Armillas or de la Cantalera opens through them: from Foz Rubiella it became Foz la Viella, documented as such in 1280, and finally Hoz de la Vieja after the name was Castilianised in the 15th century. Its inhabitants, known as hozviejanos, built their own castle in 1363 so as not to pay tribute to Montalbán, of which remains survive with battlements and arrow slits, and the church of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves, from the late 15th or early 16th century, is Gothic, with a star-ribbed vault and a polygonal apse.
