What to see and do in Vivel del Río Martín

Vivel del Río Martín
Village
Vivel del Río Martín is a municipality in the Cuencas Mineras comarca of Teruel, located in the upper Martín, in the Sistema Ibérico, between the valleys of the Vivel and Segura rivers, which join to form the Martín river already in the neighbouring municipality of Martín del Río; besides the eponymous town it includes the hamlet of Armillas. The village stands at 970 metres above sea level, between the 1.260 metres at the northern edge of the municipal area and the 950 metres on the banks of the Vivel river. It has 63 inhabitants (INE 2025), compared with the 224 recorded in the mid-19th century, when it was described in Pascual Madoz's Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico. Its irrigated market gardens produce borage, cardoon and bisaltos, the winter vegetables that sustain the region's potajes and menestras.

Monument
The original parish church, "magnificent and one of the most beautiful" according to Madoz's description, was dedicated to San Roque and was burned and destroyed in 1839 by Carlist troops, leaving only the foundations; the present church under the same dedication is a later, more modest construction.

Food and drink
The huertas irrigated by the upper Martín produce borage, cardoon and sugar snap peas, winter vegetables that sustain the pottages and vegetable stews. They are cooked with potato and oil or sautéed with garlic and ham.
