What to see and do in Segura de los Baños

Segura de los Baños
Village
Segura de los Baños is a municipality of the Cuencas Mineras, in the province of Teruel, situated at 1,125 metres above sea level. Its name comes from a pre-Roman root meaning spring or river, to which de los Baños was added because of the thermal spring site near the source of the río Aguasvivas, exploited since 1716; until 1916 it was called simply Segura. On the hill that crowns the town stand the ruins of the castillo de Segura, a 9th-century Muslim fortress which, after the Christian reconquest, formed part of the border line between Aragon and Castile; the town was destroyed during the first Carlist War (1833-1840). The old spa, closed in 1983, reopened in 2017 with calcium bicarbonate waters. It has 55 inhabitants.
