What to see and do in Alcaine

Alcaine
Village
Alcaine is a municipality in the Cuencas Mineras of Teruel, built on a crag known as la Pica, next to the river Martín and the Cueva Foradada reservoir, which preserves the group of Levantine rock art, declared a World Heritage Site in 1998, with the 56 rock figures of the Cueva de Marco. On the hill of the hermitage are the remains of an Iberian settlement, and the castle of Arcayne was built in the 11th century by the Muslims; the single-nave church of Santa María la Mayor was built in 1773. According to tradition, King James stayed in the town, and the summit of la Pica was a sacred place that gave refuge and immunity to criminals. Its festivities are held on 28 August, and it now has 38 inhabitants (INE 2025).
