What to see and do in Obón

Obón
Village
Obón is a small municipality of the Cuencas Mineras comarca, in the province of Teruel, set within the huerta of the río Martín, near its confluence with the río Cabra. First mentioned in 1177 as Ovonciello, in 1247 the town and its castle were granted by Jaime I to Peregrín de Atrosillo, and around 1420 they passed to the Bardaxí family, who held them from then on. It reached 1,202 inhabitants in 1902, its historical peak, compared with the 35 it has today (INE 2025). Its territory has shelters with Levantine rock art, such as La Coquinera and the Hocino de Chornas, and the cueva de los Huesos, with fauna from the Middle Pleistocene. Its main festivity is held on 15 August in honour of the Virgen de la Asunción, and on 17 January San Antón is celebrated with a traditional bonfire.
