What to see and do in Muniesa

Muniesa
Village
Muniesa is a municipality of the Cuencas Mineras, in the province of Teruel, situated at 782 metres above sea level, 101 kilometres from the capital and 85 from Zaragoza. It is the birthplace of Miguel de Molinos, theologian and mystic and the creator of quietism, whose Guía espiritual was eventually condemned by the Roman Inquisition. Its name comes from the Arabic munia(t) ʿā'iša(t), 'Aisha's orchard'; after the Aragonese conquest it was linked to the Honor de Huesa, until in 1559 it was incorporated as a sesma into the Comunidad de Daroca. The demographic decline that reduced the village from the 2,000 inhabitants of the 1950s to just over 500 today is being reversed with the arrival of Maghrebi immigrants, who make up around 15% of the population. It has 575 inhabitants.
Church of Muniesa
Monument
Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, whose construction process is documented from the late 14th century to the late 18th, with the main work dated to 1674. It is accompanied by an octagonal Mudéjar tower completed in 1586, 55 metres tall, the only fully octagonal example of that century in Teruel.
Festivities of Muniesa
Activity
Muniesa celebrates its patron saint festivities around 10 August in honour of San Lorenzo, lasting five to seven days; on 15 May San Isidro is also celebrated.
Miguel de Molinos, founder of quietism
Historical milestone
Born in Muniesa in 1628 and dead in Rome in 1696, Miguel de Molinos was the theologian and mystic who formulated quietism. His Spiritual Guide achieved great European diffusion before the Roman Inquisition condemned him.
Wines of Muniesa and La Hoz de la Vieja
Food and drink
The south-eastern sector of the comarca preserves dry-farmed vineyard and small wineries that make reds for local consumption. These are the wines that traditionally accompany the roasts and the spoon dishes of these localities.
