What to see and do in El Grado

El Grado
Village
El Grado is a municipality of the Somontano de Barbastro, in the province of Huesca, whose town centre sits on the slope of a hill, on the right bank of the río Cinca, next to the reservoir that bears its name. Its dominant position over the valley gave it a defensive character from the Middle Ages, with a castle and a walled enclosure. After the Christian conquest of the late 11th century, it came under the administration of the monastery of San Victorián, and later passed to the barony of Antillón; in 1463 the castle and the town were sold to the council of Zaragoza, on which it depended for several centuries. It also includes the hamlets of Artasona, Coscojuela de Fantova and Enate. The dam on the Cinca, completed in 1969, transformed the economy of a valley that until then had been one of dryland farming.
Reservoir of El Grado
Nature
The El Grado reservoir is located next to the municipality of El Grado, in the province of Huesca, in Somontano de Barbastro, downstream of the Mediano reservoir and on the Cinca River. The gravity dam that forms it was completed in 1969, and its water surface covers 1,273 hectares with a maximum capacity of 400 hm³, flooding the valley that lay downstream of Mediano. The Cinca canal rises from it, forming part of the Alto Aragón irrigation system and supplying the Cinca and the Aragón y Cataluña canals; its waters are also used to generate hydroelectric power. It is managed by the Confederación Hidrográfica del Ebro, and its main function remains irrigation, followed by electricity production.
Church of El Grado
Monument
Church of San Salvador, which obtained the title of collegiate church in 1550 by bull of Pope Julius III, with a chapter made up of a vicar-president and six beneficiaries; it belonged to the diocese of Lérida until 1571, when it passed to the diocese of Barbastro. It lost a large part of its artistic and liturgical property in 1936, during the Civil War.
Festivities of El Grado
Activity
The patronal festivities of El Grado are celebrated next to the reservoir formed by the dam on the Cinca, completed in 1969, which regulates irrigation for the Cinca and Aragón y Cataluña canals and transformed the landscape and economy of the valley.
The El Grado dam
Historical milestone
The building of the dam on the Cinca, completed in 1969, closed the basin of the reservoir that regulates the irrigation of the Cinca and Aragon and Catalonia canals, and completely transformed the landscape and the economy of the valley below Mediano.
