What to see and do in La Puebla de Castro

La Puebla de Castro
Village
La Puebla de Castro is a municipality in southern Ribagorza, in the province of Huesca, with 430 inhabitants. Next to the village lies the Roman site of Labitolosa, excavated by teams from the universities of Bordeaux and Zaragoza, with its curia and baths, the best-preserved set of Roman ruins in the Pyrenean area. Nearby, at Cerro Calvario, Visigothic and Muslim remains of the castle of Muns are preserved. The municipal area also holds the Romanesque church of San Román de Castro, consecrated in 1120, with a notable Mudejar alfarje restored in 2021, and the parish church of Santa Bárbara, from the 16th century, which holds a Gothic altarpiece and relics of San Francisco Solano and Santa Rosa de Lima. The village preserves its own speech, the Aragonese of Lower Ribagorza.
Roman Site of Labitolosa
Nature
A Roman city that flourished between the 1st century BC and the end of the 2nd century AD, when it was abandoned; it may have arisen from the assimilation of the Tolosan people by the Ilergetes. Its existence became known through a 16th-century Latin inscription that mentioned the cives Labitolosani. Teams from the universities of Bordeaux and Zaragoza have been excavating the site since 1991, bringing to light two thermal complexes, a forum with a curia and a residential domus; the heating system of the baths is one of the best preserved in the Pyrenees. The baths and the curia have been turned into a museum space and are permanently open to the public. It was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) on 31 March 1998, with the BIC code RI-55-0000519.
