What to see and do in Graus

Graus
Village
Graus is the administrative capital of the comarca of Ribagorza, in the province of Huesca, situated at the confluence of the Ésera and Isábena rivers, upstream of the Joaquín Costa reservoir, also called Barasona. The earliest population data go back to the Palaeolithic, at the Las Forcas site, and during the Reconquest King Ramiro I of Aragon died in 1063 before the walls of Graus, in a failed siege; it was his son Sancho Ramírez who took the town in 1083 and assigned it to the monastery of San Victorián. Peter II moved the San Miguel fair here. In 1911 the regenerationist Joaquín Costa died in the town, and his funeral drew a large crowd. With 3,400 inhabitants, its territory includes about twenty villages and several hamlets now uninhabited.
Historic Centre of Graus
Monument
Arcaded Renaissance ensemble of the Plaza Mayor of Graus, a town where King Ramiro I of Aragon died in 1063 during a failed siege, and where the Regenerationist thinker Joaquín Costa died in 1911, his funeral in Zaragoza drawing some forty thousand people.
Church of Graus
Monument
Church of San Miguel, built outside the town walls after the basilica of la Virgen de la Peña (mid-16th century); it preserves the image of Christ that San Vicente Ferrer gave to the town in 1415, in commemoration of which donation the fiestas mayores of 13 and 14 September are celebrated.
Festivities of Graus
Activity
The main festivities of Graus (Huesca), in honour of the Santo Cristo and San Vicente Ferrer, are held from 12 to 15 September and have been declared of tourist interest since 1973. They commemorate the 1415 visit of the friar Vicente Ferrer, who gave the town the crucifix now venerated in the parish church. The programme includes the waiting for the pipers, the dances, the albadas, the moixiganga and the Pllega, together with traditional figures such as the giants, the bigheads, the caretas, the caballez and the Furtaperas.
The Battle of Graus and the death of Ramiro I
Historical milestone
The first king of Aragon died in 1063 before the town's walls during a failed siege, against the troops of the taifa of Zaragoza supported by a Castilian contingent; his remains were taken to San Juan de la Peña.
The death of Joaquín Costa
Historical milestone
Joaquín Costa Martínez, born in Monzón on the 14th of September 1846, moved to Graus a few years after his birth, where he began his studies at the town's chair of Latinity before training in Huesca and earning doctorates in Law and in Philosophy and Letters in Madrid. Having become the foremost representative of Spanish regenerationism, he died in 1911 in the town where he had spent his youth. The Government wanted to bury him in Madrid, but popular reaction kept the coffin in Zaragoza, where some forty thousand people accompanied his burial.
Longaniza of Graus
Food and drink
The longaniza de Graus, a sausage with at least 70% lean pork seasoned with pepper, thyme, oregano, clove, nutmeg and sweet wine, is stuffed into natural casing in a horseshoe shape from 20 to 70 centimetres long; there is a fresh variety, which must be cooked, and a cured one, which can be eaten raw, and it carries the C'Alial guarantee mark of the Government of Aragon. It is made by three butchers grouped in the Association of Longaniza de Graus Manufacturers, among them Casa Maella, founded in 1415 and the oldest in Aragon. Since 1992 Graus has celebrated the Day of the Longaniza every July, declared a Fiesta de Interés Turístico de Aragón (Festival of Tourist Interest of Aragon) in 2013, at which a five-hundred-metre longaniza is grilled over embers; in 1997 it entered the Guinness Book of Records as the longest in the world, at 505.47 metres.
