What to see and do in Abizanda

Abizanda
Village
Abizanda is a municipality in Sobrarbe, in the province of Huesca, set above the river ravine and surrounded by pine groves and holm oaks, with 162 inhabitants spread between the main village and the hamlets of Escanilla, Lamata and Ligüerre de Cinca. The valley is dominated by its medieval tower, the 11th-century keep that was part of the castle ordered built by Sancho Garcés III de Pamplona at the highest watch-point over the valle del Cinca. After his death the territory passed to his son Ramiro I de Aragón, and over time the stronghold passed through different lineages until reaching the barony of Antillón. The village preserves Romanesque and Arab remains, among them the church of la Asunción, Renaissance in style with a Baroque remodeling, and several hermitages from the 12th to the 18th century. It lives from agriculture and, increasingly, from tourism.
Tower of Abizanda
Monument
The torre de Abizanda, also called the castillo de Abizanda, dominates the village of the same name in the comarca of Sobrarbe (Huesca) and is visible from its entrance. Declared Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), it dates back to 1023, when Sancho III el Mayor built a line of towers to control the border with Muslim territory, watching over the valle del Cinca and the cuenca del Isábena. Standing 24 metres high, it is one of the most spectacular towers in the Alto Aragón: attributed to Lombard master builders in the Romanesque style, it had a first phase in the 10th century, destroyed in 1006, and a second in the first half of the 11th century, with its entrance door set 7 metres above the ground. Restored between 1987 and 1990, it now houses the Museo de Creencias y Religiosidad Popular del Pirineo Central.
Festivities of Abizanda
Activity
Patron saint festival of Abizanda, in the Huesca comarca of Sobrarbe, held on 15 August and the adjoining weekend, with orchestra, ronda, brass bands and folk dances. The town also keeps other minor festivals linked to its hermitages, such as that of Santiago, on 25 July.
Castle of Abizanda
Monument
Castle and tower of Abizanda, a fortress whose origin dates back to the 10th century (destroyed in 1006 by Muslim troops) and which was rebuilt in the first half of the 11th century, as part of the defensive line that Sancho III the Great built in 1023 facing the Muslim territories; it watched over the Cinca valley and the Isábena basin. In 1413 it withstood the siege of the governor of Aragon, after its lord, the Count of Urgell Jaime II, rose up in arms following his failure to be elected successor at the Compromise of Caspe. The tower, 24 metres high and attributed to Lombard master builders, retains a perimeter hoarding on its fifth floor and an entrance set 7 metres above the ground. Restored between 1987 and 1990, it today houses part of the Museo de las Creencias y la Religiosidad Popular del Pirineo Central.
Crespillos de borraja
Food and drink
Tender borage leaves coated in a batter of flour, egg, milk and anise and fried in oil, then dusted with sugar; they are prepared at the end of winter, when the borage is at its best in the vegetable gardens.
