What to see and do in Naval

Naval
Village
Naval is a municipality of the province of Huesca, in the comarca of Somontano de Barbastro, at the foot of the sierra de Arbe. Until the opening of a new route for the A-138 in 1989, it was a natural passage between the Somontano, the Sobrarbe and France. It has 270 inhabitants, far from the more than 1,600 of the mid-19th century. Its church of Santa María, Gothic-Renaissance and declared a Monumento Histórico-Artístico (a former Spanish heritage protection category, equivalent to Historic-Artistic Monument), was built next to the castle in the 16th century; its plateresque main altarpiece was destroyed during the Civil War. It also has the church of San Fabián y San Sebastián, from the 17th century. Naval owes its historical prosperity to the salt-selling monopoly granted to it by Jaime I for a good part of the province; the saltworks of Iruelas and la Rolda sustained its economy for centuries.
Church of Naval
Monument
Church of Santa María, built in the second half of the 16th century in Aragonese Gothic style with 17th- and 18th-century alterations; it has a four-bay nave and a polygonal apse with star vaulting. Its 16th-century Plateresque wooden altarpiece was lost during the Civil War; the building was declared a Monumento Histórico-Artístico (Spain's heritage designation in force between 1931 and 1985) in 1983.
Festivities of Naval
Activity
Naval has San Fabián and San Sebastián as its patron saints, celebrated on 20 January, and also preserves the festivities of San Antón in January with the traditional bonfires.
The salt monopoly of Naval
Historical milestone
Jaime I, who reigned between 1213 and 1276, granted Naval the monopoly on the sale of salt in much of what is today the province of Huesca; for centuries the salt works of Iruelas and La Rolda sustained the village's economy.
Salt from the salt pans of Naval
Food and drink
In the stepped basins of Iruelas and la Rolda the salt water of the springs evaporates in the sun until it crystallizes; this salt supplied the pig slaughters and the salting of the whole Alto Aragón for centuries.
